Nan Rich Takes on Stand Your Ground & Supports Dream Defenders

Senator Nan Rich is making more waves in her bid for Governor. In an exclusive interview with the West Orlando News, Rich discussed her recent experience meeting with the Dream Defenders, students who are protesting and camping out in Rick Scott’s office in Tallahassee until a special session is called to address the Stand Your Ground law, the number of young adults in prisons and racial profiling. Rich has called for a special session and says the law needs to be reformed as the law is being implemented in a way that was never intended by many of the legislators who voted for it.

“It was so remarkable when I met with the Dream Defenders,” Rich said. “To see these young people organizing in this non-violent way and articulating such thoughtful concerns about the problems we face, it is just amazing. They have important stories to tell that should be able to influence the changes that need to be made in the laws.”

Nan Rich is bringing a fresh, progressive narrative to the race for Governor and in a year against Rick Scott, it could be exactly what Democrats need. Also from the interview:

“You don’t have to be the same race, religion or sexual orientation as the people you are trying to serve,” said Rich. “But you do need to surround yourself with people that understand all these different cultures and experiences and I think that is a major part of the answer. You try to bring together people, not just to have a conversation but to bring together those who have the experience so you have all the players at the table.”

Rick Scott has rejected a special session and the Republican-dominated legislature doesn’t seem eager to try to fix the flawed law. In fact, the lack of action is the same thing we saw when then-Republican Governor Charlie Crist ignored calls to fix flaws in Stand Your Ground three years ago.
