There is no doubt Universal Orlando knows how to put on a show – and yesterday’s Grand Opening of Transformers: The Ride 3D was fit for Hollywood. Even Steven Spielberg walked the red carpet and enjoyed a front row seat alongside Universal Orlando executives. In an awesome display of theatrics, fireworks and fighter jets, the new Transformers ride opened with a bang.

A large crowd of guests swarmed the new NEST (Non-biological Extraterrestrial Species Treaty) building and lagoon more than an hour before the show began. Many were wearing vintage Transformers gear and excitement was in the atmosphere. It would prove to be worth the wait in the Florida sun.

In addition to Spielberg, the big stars of the show were Optimus Prime and Bumblebee. After honoring our nation’s military branches and veterans and introducing the stars, the battle soon began. Megatron, leader of the Decepticons, launched his attack on Orlando.

Optimus Prime and Bumblee were ordered to “roll out” and explosions soon rocked the parks’ streetscapes. Surround sounds of gunshots and helicopters flying overhead added to the feel – not to mention the signature “transforming” sound after the Autobots rolled out for battle. In an epic finale, fighter jets flew over the crowds through the firework explosions mid-air, forcing an enemy retreat lasting long enough to open the ride and welcome new recruits for the battle ahead.

The spectacle ended with Optimus Prime urging recruits to become “Freedom Fighters” saying the battle would be won, but only with everyone’s help.

Transformers: The Ride 3D is now officially open to guests to kick off the summer season.

Having already been able to ride Transformers during the soft openings, I can say it is a great ride, but the grand opening show and celebration makes the whole experience even better and makes me want to ride it again soon. Way to go, Universal Orlando, great job on the grand opening of Transformers.
